Leaning in front of her medicine cabinet and looking at the slew of cannabis-infused skincare products that promise to "fix" or "prevent," editor-in-chief Sophia Chubut thought there had to be a hotter way to do beauty. Its answer is Testament, a skincare brand that launched in July 2021 with just two products packed with familiar yet effective ingredients inspired by its heritage and origins.
The carp family is of Syrian, Turkish and Spanish origin. When she wanted to launch a beauty line, she wanted to take the idea of a Mediterranean diet and lifestyle and her bottle literally: the idea of fresh fruits and vegetables, a bottle of red wine on the table and “the idea never left me,” Bustle said. "I think there are ingredients available that can give your skin a lot of benefits, antioxidants and vitamins." Basically, what Chebbot wanted to create with his will is the "Mediterranean Face Diet".
The first two products I launched were the Moroccan Chamomile Sleeping Mask and the 3-in-1 Turkish Coffee Mask, both of which are excellent ingredients that you can pick up from the garden or buy in your kitchen. The first contains an antioxidant-rich blend of nine Mediterranean herbs, including refreshing mint and oregano, blue tansyf (better known as Moroccan chamomile), and whitening niacinamide. Besides Turkish coffee, the 3-in-1 mask also contains vitamin E, rich avocado, and powerful antioxidant cocoa to protect your skin from environmental stress.
Chabot says her grandmother is a great inspiration for the list of foods you can find to make a coffee mask at home. “He had a garden in Brooklyn, and we went to pick grape leaves. Years later, I found out that he was mixing oils from the kitchen and applying them to his body.” In developing New Testament formulas, Chubbot wanted to build on the idea of using what was available to the skin.
Testament recently added a third product to its range, Ancient Grape Vitality Serum with a blend of Vitis vinifera (light grape seed oil), vitamin C, raspberry seed, and pumpkin seed oil. When it comes to packaging, Chabot says he and his team thought about sustainability, but he didn't want to sacrifice aesthetics. As such, all of the brand's blends come in attractive recyclable tinted glass jars with lids made from reclaimed and biodegradable beechwood. The design on top of the boxes that hold the jars, and especially the mirrored brass detailing, is a tribute to the Turkish coffee pot that Chabos still owns today.
Its goal was not to create a series of elements that dominate the morning and evening routine, but to provide thoughtful presentations that feel special and impactful. "I want every product to be something you can't live without," Chabot says. Find a humidifier for Winter 2023. Meanwhile, Chabot enjoys interacting with customers and others in the industry and getting valuable feedback that he can put into action. The goal, he says, is to continue to connect the dots between chemistry and what brings us happiness.
