Do reflective gloves really work?

Exfoliating gloves usually consist of a strip that attaches to the skin and when rubbed against the skin helps remove dead skin cells, excess oil and dirt.

"An at-home spa option, exfoliating mitts leave skin feeling soft. Your skin's glands produce oil to retain moisture. But too much of this oil along with dead skin cells can cause pores to build up and clog." It can lead to breakouts,” says Rekha Taylor, MD, Health & Aesthetics.

What are the benefits of removing gloves?

"When used a few times a week, exfoliating gloves and shower mitts help rid the skin of dead skin cells, a major cause of sagging skin and breakouts. They help eliminate dull skin and leave healthy skin underneath, more radiant and prevent ingrown hairs that often lead to unsightly spots.

The benefits of glove and mitt cleaning include:

  • A natural exfoliating, peeling and whitening

  • Removes dry and rough skin

  • Prevents damaged hair

  • Improves blood circulation

  • Combating keratosis pilaris (chicken skin).

  • Helps remove artificial tan build-up

  • Promotes smooth skin

  • Reduce swelling

Do you need exfoliating gloves?

"Removing gloves can be helpful to remove dead skin, open pores, and prevent ingrown hairs, but I wouldn't say they're necessary for proper bathing," says Dr. Taylor.

But they are not the only solution for the skin. Anna, a beautician at Kat & Co, said of the exfoliating mitts, "I don't think there's a tool as effective as using our own hands because it's more versatile, less expensive and more environmentally friendly."

It is good to clean the gloves.

As long as you use it properly, so not too often, yes. “The rougher the texture of the gloves, the more aggressive the cleaner. Many recommendations suggest not exfoliating more than once or twice a week because it removes too much oil and causes the skin to over-produce and compensate, and I caution against the same with gloves," says Dr. Taylor.

“The main disadvantages are excessive exfoliation, which causes the skin to even out the dryness and produce more oil, making the skin worse. Also, people often exfoliate too aggressively, which can damage the skin and cause irritation and redness," she added.

Avoid using exfoliating gloves on sensitive, reactive, or acne-prone skin, as they can do more harm than good, adds Dr. added Anna. If you have particularly sensitive or reactive skin, seek professional advice instead.

Also, avoid using on broken skin or in combination with retinoids, AHAs, or BHAs as it can cause excessive peeling. When this happens, they can compromise the skin's defenses, causing irritation and rashes," she added.

Are Exfoliating Gloves Better Than Loofah?

"I would say that exfoliating gloves are better than loofah because they give you more control over the pressure on the skin and are better at reaching those hard-to-reach areas," said Dr. Taylor.

Are Exfoliating Gloves Better Than Body Scrubs?

It's really a matter of choice. for dr. “I recommend Zoe Skin Health Exfoliating Polish when exfoliating gloves to gently and effectively exfoliate skin, removing dead skin cells and improving skin texture, tissue and cell renewal. Vitamins AC and E provide antioxidant protection,” says Taylor.
