EXCLUSIVE: 1091 Pictures has acquired the US rights to new romantic drama Under My Skin . The film marks the debut of Australian writer/director David O'Donnell and was produced by Raynan O'Keefe and Alex Russell. 1091 Pictures has scheduled an on-demand release on June 6.
The story follows Danny, a free-spirited artist who falls in love with Ryan, a struggling lawyer. When Danny thinks about sex, their love is tested.
The main character, Danny, is played by four different actors who identify as non-binary or non-binary transgender: Liv Hewson, Bobby Salvor Menuez, Kylo Freeman, and Lex Ryan. Producers Alex Russell and Alexis Denisof also star.
"Under My Skin follows four people of the opposite sex who have all evolved into the same person and live within the same person," says O'Keefe, who describes herself as non-binary transgender. "It's always an uphill battle and a hurdle to overcome for the actors to embody the characters at least a little bit. Playing four is a feat and I'm proud of it. You shine watching the movie, which is the shine and the authenticity of an experience that a skilled actor can replicate without such knowledge. It is a divine abode.
Under My Skin opened at the London Raindance Film Festival, where Hewson won Best Performance for his performance. The film was also nominated for the Australian Film Academy and the Directors Guild of Australia Awards.
"We can't wait to finally bring this film to American audiences," O'Donnell said. “There is something for everyone in this story, and its success with the general public shows that people are hungry for new stories, new iterations of traditional narratives. We hope it will continue to resonate and challenge new audiences.
The deal was negotiated by Lev Avery-Peck on behalf of 1091 Pictures and Ryan Bury of Motion Picture Exchange on behalf of the filmmakers.
