Our coffee may be an important part of our morning routine, but new research shows it has major health benefits. So we want to know if adding vitamins to our kvass makes it a great dish .
In a study published in BMJ Medicine, researchers found that drinking coffee is linked to type 2 diabetes. And not only that, caffeine also helps reduce body fat.
They looked at the lifetime caffeine consumption of nearly 800,000 people and found that those with the highest caffeine consumption had the lowest body mass index (BMI).
Well, just when you thought coffee couldn't get any better, healthy coffee is definitely making waves. And we're not surprised: After all, who wouldn't want a vitamin hit as simple as having a morning smoothie every day?
Coffee company Rockit has launched the UK's first coffee capsules, Brain Boost capsules and Immune Boost capsules, a small drinkable product that aims to improve overall health by adding vitamins, minerals and herbs.
Brain Boost Pods 100% Arabica pills are rich in vitamins B2, B3, B5, B6, and B12, which the brand says support the nervous system and promote better mental performance.
The immune boosting capsules are also made with 100% Arabica coffee and are rich in vitamins B6, B12, D and zinc to support a healthy immune system.
The good news is that the capsules are easy to use, compatible with Nespresso machines, 100% recyclable, and available from Tesco retailing for £4 this month (on sale until April 11th; get details).
All this is very good, but is taking vitamins with coffee good for our health and is the combination effective? Let's take a closer look.
Should caffeine and vitamins be mixed?
There's no easy answer, but according to registered dietitian Uta Bollinger, founder of Canal Nutrition, it may be a good option for people who aren't getting the vitamins they need from their diet.
"If, on the one hand, someone refuses to change their diet and doesn't take any other type of supplement, perhaps coffee is the best option," he notes.
But BANT registered dietitian Eva Humphreys explains that we need to be careful about what we add to our coffee, and we need to evaluate results objectively.
"It's also important to note that artificial ingredients, such as those added to coffee, may not cause us to fully absorb it," Humphreys explains. "So if we drink 100% of our RDA for vitamins from fortified coffee, we can find ourselves in a situation where we think we're getting 10% of those nutrients."
It's also important to note that caffeine isn't a good thing for everyone: According to Bollinger, "As a nutritionist, I always recommend that people cut back on their caffeine intake, and when they talk to me about anxiety, we usually cut out entirely.
What is the importance of food supplements for our health?
According to Bollinger , nutritional supplements are an important tool for enhancing our overall health : "In my clinic, I always provide a diet, but supplements are not only important for weaknesses, they can be more focused and help us see results faster." And some products are even easier to include.
However, rather than viewing it as a "one size fits all" approach, I recommend talking to a dietitian if you want to take anything other than vitamin D or a multivitamin. It does not interfere with any medication you are taking."
Added Humphreys: “As a nutritionist, I provide short-term supplementation to my clients when they have specific needs. For example, an athlete may have such a large appetite that it may be difficult to meet those needs with food alone. Supplements can be helpful in this regard. General, it is more important to get the vitamins we need from food.
