Dolphins Q&A: How Should Mike McDaniel Manage Running Back Touches When All Are Healthy?

Here's the latest episode of the Miami Dolphins Q&A, where South Florida Sun Sentinel writers David Furon and Chris Perkins answer readers' questions.

A question. Who misses game time? What about Von Achan? Salvon Ahmed. Jeff Wilson? Chris Brooks coaches the team. - Nick Soto at X

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel has a decision to make when all backs are healthy, but it's a matter of wishful thinking.

"I think so," McDaniel said Monday after two healthy starts after watching Aiken lead the Broncos to 203 rushing yards and four total touchdowns.

So Raheem Mostert, who had four touchdowns against Denver on Sunday, knows he needs the workload in this offense. After the discovery, Ache became an unwanted player. Ahmed, who was ahead of Achan in the depth chart and is playing well, is recovering from an injury. Wilson is eligible to return from injured reserve in Buffalo's next game. And undrafted rookie Brooks, after a strong preseason, had a 52-yard run on Sunday to make the point.

"There are five-pack legendary running backs," McDaniel joked, We Believe Monday, "and you never know when it's going to come."

One thing is certain. Achan makes sure McDaniel doesn't have to push Ahmed or Wilson back if he needs more time.

Ahmed look alike and are often mistaken from a distance during training because they look similar and jersey numbers 28 and 26 are hard to tell apart. But Ahmed, even if he does, probably won't do what Achan did on Sunday, and Achan has top speed that not many do.

Wilson is known for his ability to win the ball at short distances and at the goal line. One of Mostert's touchdowns went for a yard, and he and Achen are physical runners with their size. But Wilson could have picked off running back Alec Ingold, which led to a second down on third-and-4-and-1 in the second quarter.

Conclusion. After what Akan did on Sunday, he needs to find the touch. When they are healthy, they bring others and the match determines what will be the spread of the carry.

A question. If we were to add one player from Dolphins history to this team, who would it be? For me, it's either Zach Thomas or Richmond Webb. - Nathan in Neighbor X

Webb has always been a fantastic prospect, but the Dolphins currently have a good fit at left tackle. Terron Armstead is a four-time Pro Bowler and had a great performance against the Broncos during the season. Even in the losing games, Kendall Lam performed well.

Zach Thomas, I would love to have a leader in the middle of this defense. However, it will be a little different for him than the 4-3 linebacker "Mike" used in the late 1990s and early 2000s. But, he's very versatile, and Raquan Davis, Christian Wilkins and Zach Sealer can take blockers away from him, just like Tim Bowens and Daryl Gardener did.

What about cornerbacks Sam Madison or Patrick Surens on the same teams?

When Jalen Ramsey is out, one of them will be good with Xavier Howard, and you can have Kader Koho on the court in nickel packages.

Or if we want to go back further, how about Bob Kuchenberg on the left? Isaiah Wynn has performed well at the position, but if Kuechenberg were in the current lineup, there would be no competition in camp.

A question. Has Van Ginkel earned his starting role? Who wastes time playing? It was clearly built to protect Vic Fangio. - Nick Soto at X

Andrew van Ginkel deserves to get every minute, but it will still depend on the parameters, the different packages used and the health of the other people around him.

Van Ginkel's versatility in the linebacker corps helps in that regard.

Is Jaylan Phillips Injured? No problem, Van Ginkel added. Is Bradley Chubb out? No problem, Van Ginkel added. Are Jerome Baker or David Long out or just not a good fit for a certain team? No problem, Van Ginkel added.

And it's worth it in nickel containers. It was undoubtedly a strength and a tool for Fangio.
