Expert Weighs In On Whether Or Not You Should Wash Your Face For At Least 60 Seconds

A creative shares her skincare tips from multiple visits to a Korean beauty clinic in Los Angeles.

After moving to Los Angeles, Hana Sim (@hanasim_) regularly receives facial treatments at Korean beauty clinic Misarang Beauty. She also learned some tips and tricks from her makeup artist that she can share on TikTok and which she says can be easily implemented at home.

According to Sim, using a clay mask, especially after "long makeup days," is a helpful way to combat blackheads forming on your nose, especially if you have oily skin. Reapplying sunscreen to the face every four hours is also essential, as most products "only last about four hours." He also recommends “focusing on the neck and décolleté” when applying skincare products.

However, one of her most in-depth skincare tips concerns how often you should wash your face. "You have to wash your face for at least 60 seconds," she says, then adds that her makeup artist apparently "knew right away" that she wasn't doing that.

“I actually only washed my face for 5-10 seconds. I know. Is it disgusting? "I wash my face for 60 seconds after putting on makeup, not in the morning," she says. "But I see a big difference in my skin, especially in blackheads, after I started using it."

This concept is not new. According to Allure, the #60SecondRule went viral on Twitter in 2019 after Los Angeles esthetician Nayamka Roberts-Smith (@labeautyologist) asked her followers to clean their faces twice a day for a full minute each time. .

“Sixty seconds gives the cleanser enough time to soften oil, penetrate pores and soften skin. "It really removes excess sweat, dirt, SPF, makeup, and anything else that's left on the skin throughout the day," Roberts-Smith explains in a video. Posted on TikTok in 2021.

According to Sarah Akram, celebrity esthetician and eyelash and eyebrow specialist, the 60-second rule is actually a "more efficient way" to wash your face "instead of the usual 15 to 20 seconds."

"The goal of this regimen is to soften your skin while you apply cleanser and warm water to your face," she told Yahoo's In The Know via email. “This helps break down sebum buildup better. Give the cleanser enough time to penetrate deeply into the skin and sufficiently remove dirt, oil and any makeup residue. For this cleansing method, I recommend cleansers like the Urban Skin Even Tone Cleansing Bar, Neova Radiant Wash, and Biopelle Exfoliating Cream Cleanser, all great options for effectively cleansing your skin.
