Tips To Help Your Skin Thrive This Winter

Winter is hard on your skin. Dry, cold weather causes dehydration and can even cause “winter rash”: dry, irritated, red, bumpy, itchy, inflamed skin. So it's time to improve your skin care routine.

Associate professor of dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Oyetewa Oyirinde shares some tips for maintaining glowing skin.

“In winter, our skin dries out because the air is less humid and we use heat, which makes it even drier,” Bayer explains in a statement. “Dry skin is more prone to breakouts.”

Therefore, it is recommended to modify your daily routine of cleansing, moisturizing and sun protection.

If you use lotion often, consider using a thick, creamy moisturizer. "If you're using a regular cream-type moisturizer, consider switching to an oil-type moisturizer," says Oyrinde.

If you like outdoor sports or winter sports, don't forget sunscreen.

She says following a good skincare regimen can help prevent winter breakouts. According to him, the lips and the skin around the eyes are sensitive not only to colds, but also to irritation caused by allergies, colds or flu.

It's easy to soothe irritated skin. Simply take a jar of Vaseline and apply it to the affected areas. Vaseline forms a thick, moisture-resistant film that prevents further damage from wind and cold.

Do you have dry and chapped lips? Vaseline or lip balms containing hydrocortisone may help.

Oyrinde also said dry air can cause serious symptoms in people with eczema, psoriasis or other skin rashes.

Allergic inflammation sometimes causes hives or other skin rashes. Children are especially prone to eczema flare-ups in winter, while older adults may experience skin irritations when their skin begins to dry out.

Oyrinnde, director of Baylor's Skin of Color clinic, points out that people with darker skin are more likely to develop dark spots after tanning. Using sunscreen can prevent this.

One of the best things about winter, she says, is that if you're considering a skincare routine, now is the time to plan it.

“Laser treatments like laser hair removal are usually best done in winter,” says Oyrinde. “For most laser treatments, the skin needs to be completely exfoliated and people spend less time outside because of the cold.”

Other procedures like Botox or fillers are usually done in winter, so changes are more visible in summer. According to Oyrinnde, these days, “patients want all beauty treatments to be shiny.”
