Barring a surprise, the Kansas City Chiefs have no plans to use wide receiver Kadarius Toney in Sunday's Super Bowl, sources told CBS Sports.
Toney will be a healthy backup for the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII, a year after one of the biggest plays in Super Bowl LVIII.
The Warriors wide receiver hasn't played for the Chiefs since Week 15 against the Patriots. Tony has been dealing with hip and ankle injuries and missed the Ravens game two weeks ago due to giving birth.
Toney has 27 receptions for 169 yards and just one touchdown this season. He has made more than 15 percent of his field goals this season, a game high.
Super Bowl LVIII will air on CBS and Nickelodeon, and you can stream it on Paramount+ . How to look
In Week 1, Toney caught a pass from Mahomes, saw the Lions in hand, intercepted and returned for a touchdown. The Chiefs lost to Detroit 21-20.
In week 14, Tony was eliminated from the Travis Kelce Championship. The Chiefs lost to Buffalo 20-17.
The following week against the Patriots, Toney's easy pass and Mahomes interception turned into an interception. Mahomes was frustrated on the sideline after the game. After that suspension, Toney missed four more games and hasn't played since.
Tony went live on Instagram before the AFC Championship game and said some weird things that he later regretted.
Sources in Kansas City say Tony isn't a bad guy, but there are clearly trust issues in the building.
Toney returned a fumble 65 yards to the Philadelphia 5-yard line in the fourth quarter of last year's Super Bowl. It is the longest punt return in Super Bowl history. After three plays, the Chiefs scored the final touchdown.
The Giants drafted Tony 20th overall in 2021 and traded him to the Chiefs a year later. He has one year left on his contract and may not return to the Chiefs next season.
