Turns out pumpkins have a place outside of cake fillings, spicy dairy, and the front porch. This casual fall staple can really do wonders for rough and dull skin.
"Pumpkin contains alpha hydroxy acids that can help gently exfoliate the skin," says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Emmanuel Lucas, MD, director of New York Dermatology and assistant professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Alpha hydroxy acids (or AHAs) are a classic skin care product known for their ability to tighten pores and brighten skin.
In addition to its exfoliating benefits, Lucas says, pumpkin also acts as an antioxidant, an important component in protecting the skin from the daily environmental stresses responsible for premature aging.
"[It's] rich in vitamin C, copper and zinc, which can help reduce unwanted skin pigmentation," she added.
Like most good things, you can overdo it, which Lucas cautions against incorporating pumpkin into your beauty routine.
Because of the hydroxy acids, pumpkin is difficult to use on sensitive skin. [However] it may provide additional benefit to dark-skinned patients with unwanted skin changes or pigmentation.
Because pumpkin comes in a wide variety of products, Lucas advises people with sensitive skin to stick to oil- or cream-based formulations rather than harsh scrubs.
Your pumpkin-covered skin care guide is a priority, and it's time to enjoy this fall staple now that we're officially on our way to fall. Get the much-loved Vitamin C Serum, which can help boost collagen production, or a vitamin-rich cleansing mask that's perfect for targeting clogged pores.
