I'll try • The nagging question of whether Jaren Hall was hurt last week is finally answered.
Not only was the quarterback playing with an injured shoulder, he was unable to practice the week before against Notre Dame. Hall threw for just 120 yards on 17 passes as BYU lost 28-20.
"He was impressed with the Utah State game," offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick said. “I didn't train properly last week. I thought it was definitely not his best game in the game. He played untrained.
After the game, Hall's condition was questioned by coach Kalani Sitake due to his reaction to Hall's fight. Sitak said Hal was injured but was able to play against the Irish. "I was very emotional," Hall said.
But the transparency on both sides provided a better picture of what happened at Notre Dame last week.
BYU generally has a strict policy on players not practicing during the week. But for Hall, a different situation arose earlier in the week where he played regardless of his training reps.
Hall said he's prepared to play and "take it day by day."
"I was sure I was going to play," said Roderick. "It depends a little bit on [the coaches] if we're willing to play him without a training session. I think he's done well enough to give our show a chance."
"I trusted him to play without training, which is rare. You don't get to do that very often in college football. It was a special case [of Hall] how much he played and what he meant to our team.
Hall's shoulder quickly became a problem in the first two rounds of the match. In his first pass attempt, the youngster missed the ball by a few yards. On his second shot, the pass landed 10 yards from close range. Roderick admits he looks "bad".
Hall was 3-for-8 for 11 yards at halftime.
There were questions about the placement of replacement quarterback Jacob Conover. However, the offensive staff said it "didn't get to that point."
In the second half, Hall's shoulder began to improve as he completed 6 of 9 passes for 109 yards.
But Roderick admitted he changed his game to deal with Hall's shoulder injury. Hall had the fewest pass attempts since becoming the starter last Saturday. It's the first time since 2021 that Hall hasn't started for 250 yards.
"It's the middle of the season, everybody's tired," Hall said Wednesday. “I got drugged a few weeks ago, I struggled.
This week, Hall said he practiced all reps and felt "better." Roderick thinks the plan is to start over at the Hall.
"He didn't play well in the first half and he knows it," Roderick said. "He was very responsible for our team, but he did things that gave us a lot of chances in the second half. He made a lot of plays. Even though it wasn't his best game, I think he showed great courage and leadership. I hope she is much better this week."
