Makeup is a form of body art that has been used to alter the appearance of the face for thousands of years. Although makeup styles have changed over time and across cultures, the actual facial modifications are very similar, with the goal of making the skin smoother and facial features more defined. For example, think of Cleopatra's eyes or Kylie Jenner's lips.
Skin-focused makeup products, such as foundation and concealer, are used to smooth the skin. Using two physical measurements of skin smoothness, the researchers found that makeup-free skin was smoother.
The same study also provided evidence that makeup affects the perceived smoothness of skin: participants rated the same faces as having smoother skin with makeup than without makeup.
Interestingly, the effect size of the perception score was larger than the effect size of the physical measurement, indicating that there are factors influencing the perception of skin evenness that are not captured by the physical measurement of individual skin areas.
So new work published today aims to explore the potential of makeup to make facial skin more even by, among other things, increasing the contrast between the skin and surrounding facial features.
To test this hypothesis, researchers conducted two studies in which participants rated how their skin looked with and without makeup. The first study used digital makeup, while the second used real makeup applied by professional makeup artists. Importantly, on the face in make-up, cosmetics are applied to the lips, eyes and eyebrows, but no products are applied to the skin. Thus, the skin is physically the same in both cases, only the facial features differ.
Dr. who led the study. Carlotta Batres: “Whether makeup was applied digitally, as in Study 1, or by a professional makeup artist, as in Study 2, we found that participants rated their skin as more visible even after applying makeup. Eyebrows, eyes and lips. The results show that cosmetics make skin smoother, not only with products like foundation and concealer that are applied directly to the skin, but also with products like lipstick and mascara that are applied to facial features.
But why is the skin more visible when the makeup is applied only to the features of the face? Researchers suggest that the appearance of spots and wrinkles can be suppressed by increasing the contrast of the face with the help of cosmetics. This new research shows that makeup affects the appearance of the skin not only by applying products to the skin, but also by changing the visual context of the skin.
The study, "Makeup applied to facial features smoothes skin," was published today in the scientific journal Vision Research.
