Survival Guide For Healthy Holiday Skin [Column]

Survival Guide For Healthy Holiday Skin [Column]

It's that time of year again, the holidays are approaching. The holidays are the most wonderful time of the year, but for some they can be very challenging and stressful. The weather is cooler and your skin is drier and more sensitive during the holidays. You might be traveling for a long time, which basically disrupts your skin care routine.

During the holidays, we are more likely to eat the wrong foods because we have a lot of time for fitness or skin care routines. These factors can cause rashes and acne.

To help keep your skin healthy, board-certified dermatologist Maria Hanaway, MD, PhD, shares skin care survival tips to keep your skin healthy while on vacation.

Hanaway practices at our Dermatology Associates - Plymouth Meeting office at 633 W. Germantown Pike, Suite 102, Plymouth Meeting. He focuses on working closely with his patients to develop effective and efficient treatment plans. Hannaway strongly recommends the following tips for anyone looking to keep their skin glowing, smooth, and protected this holiday season and beyond.

• Use sunscreen daily: Choose a broad-spectrum, waterproof sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

• Avoid tanning beds – If you want that golden glow, use a self-tanner.

• Simplify your skin care routine – focus on the essentials: a gentle cleanser, sunscreen and moisturizer.

• Choose skin care products according to your skin type - sensitive (may sting or burn after using the product); normal (clear and inaudible); dry (cracked, itchy or rough); mixed (dry in some areas and oily in others); Oil (gloss and oil)

• Pay attention to your lips too: Use a lip balm or lipstick with SPF 30 or higher.

• Keep hands away from mouth – avoid swelling, pinching or pimples.

• Check your skin regularly for skin cancer: Look for new, different areas that itch or bleed or change in size, shade or color.

If you notice a suspicious spot, consult a board-certified dermatologist. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Hanaway at Dermatology Partners - Plymouth, call 610-992-1865 or visit www.dermpartners.com to schedule an appointment online.

It is very important to prepare and protect your skin during the holidays. Prevention is better than cure. Stick to your normal skin care routine, but it's recommended to stop using products containing retinol a week before your trip, as it makes your skin more vulnerable to the sun's UV rays.

Using SPF sunscreen is important to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, but you should protect your skin before going on vacation.

Preparation before the holidays

On the plane - don't wear makeup, it helps your skin to breathe. Use a hyaluronic acid product to deeply hydrate the skin. This will help hydrate your skin, but also balance moisture levels during the flight.

• Avoid: Use an antioxidant serum daily followed by sunscreen to protect your skin's defenses and calm pigment-producing cells. Moisturize your skin with a hyaluronic acid serum or gel to prevent breakouts and dry skin.

• Stay indoors: Continue to use sunscreen daily to repair damage and rejuvenate skin.

A guide to survival

With a little help from the experts at Dermatology Partners and their tips for surviving the holidays with healthy skin, you can keep your skin glowing all season long.

Tips to remember:

• Dry skin in winter: use thick moisturizer.

• Keep your skin clean: Remove makeup before going to bed.

• Drink plenty of water.

• Turkey is low in calories and high in protein. Your skin needs protein to regenerate healthy new cells.

• Pumpkin is rich in natural enzymes that help digest and break down toxins, fight free radical damage, prevent aging and maintain skin moisture.

• Choose healthy foods, limit sweets on holidays.

• Although the holidays can be stressful, practice relaxation and good sleep (stress can cause psoriasis, acne and other chronic skin conditions).

• Regularize your skin care routine to help prevent skin diseases.

• Keep your hand cream and lip balm in your purse or pocket and use often.

• Soak your feet every night to prepare your shoes for the holidays.

• Exfoliate once a week to maintain that healthy glow from head to toe.
