Today, it seems like a million different foods are marketed as "healthy." Many of these foods have obvious lifestyle benefits and contain vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that can make a big difference in your diet. Other products are finding ways to reduce calories, salt, sugar and fat and provide healthier alternatives to traditional options. You'd never guess that some of these "healthy" foods are worse for you than candy.

To determine which foods are no less good for our body than candy, it is first important to understand why candy is bad for you.

"Candy is generally considered unhealthy because it's high in sugar and calories and usually not rich in nutrients," says Trista Best, MD, of Balance One Spleen . "Consuming too much sugar can lead to many health problems, including weight gain, tooth decay and an increased risk of certain chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease."

"Sweets are often classified as 'empty calorie' foods, meaning they provide energy (i.e., calories) but few essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and fiber," Best continues. "It's important to have a balanced diet that includes a variety of healthy foods and limit foods high in sugar, such as sweets."
