First lady Jill Biden will undergo surgery to remove a scar above her right eye.
On Jan. 4, the White House released a memo from President Joe Biden's physician, Kevin O'Connor, saying that Jill Biden, 71, will undergo an outpatient procedure next week, Jan. 11.
"During a routine skin cancer exam, a small lesion was discovered on the First Lady's right eye," Vanessa Valdivia, the first lady's press secretary, said on her Twitter page, noting that "doctors advise against it. for the abundance of attention." "
Jill Biden's "routine outpatient procedure," known as Mohs surgery, will take place at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, according to Dr. O'Connor's memo. During the operation, tissue is removed and examined.
"Once the process is complete, we will provide an update and provide additional information," the statement said.
Additionally, Valdivia told NBC News that no additional information beyond the letter is currently available, but will be available after further processing.
According to the Mayo Clinic, Mohs surgery is a procedure that involves cutting through thin layers of skin and looking closely for signs of cancer. "The goal of Mohs surgery is to remove all skin cancer without damaging surrounding healthy skin," the website states.
In April 2021, Jill Biden also underwent a "routine medical procedure."
At the time, the White House didn't share details of the first lady's approach, but it did note that Jill and Joe Biden would go home and "continue on their normal schedule."
Months later, in July, Walter Reed was treated for a leg injury while hiking on a beach in Hawaii.
The first lady's latest news comes just days after she celebrated the New Year with a video collage she shared on Instagram.
