John Lynch: Trey Lance Has To Prove That He Can Stay Healthy

The 49ers have had injury issues in recent years with quarterbacks Jimmy Garoppolo, Trey Lance, or most recently Brock Purdy.

Garoppolo's injury history was one of the reasons the club went out and traded Lance.

In a recent press conference Wednesday, general manager John Lynch was asked if there was anything the 49ers could do to address their injuries or if there was anything beyond the club's control. As he did, he had something interesting to say about the team's third overall pick in 2021.

"Honestly, I think it's tough to play in this league," Lynch said. "I understand that some players have incredible stamina. As Kyle [Shanahan] said, Brock has been incredibly resilient throughout his career. He throws himself in the wrong position. the ball comes down the field and the NFL receiver pulls his arm the other way." It just doesn't stay put, so it smells.

“Trey's had his issues, and Trey's had a tough time the last couple of years. Obviously he's got to make sure he's healthy, but I know there were times early in my career when I struggled to stay healthy, and then I went eight years without missing a beat. Shot. It happens sometimes. And yes, I'm sure people wonder if Jimmy has his issues, but trust me, he doesn't need to play our quarterback or anything.

"I think it's just a coincidence and we're looking at everything, but I don't think we have any other issues. I think it's a tough position in this league.

Lance has only started four games in two seasons and shouldn't have started. In 2021, however, he suffered a knee injury before breaking his ankle in the second week of the season.

For now, the 49ers are expected to start 2023 with Lance and Purdy at quarterback, though Lance will have an advantage in training camp because he can re-program in the offseason. Either way, the 49ers could have been plagued by injuries.
