Vitiligo itself does not cause many problems. It can be related to autoimmune diseases such as thyroiditis and hepatitis. Vitiligo often comes with a tag of social isolation. There may be some cosmetic surgery or dermatological procedures. Extensive vitiligo is a risk factor for skin cancer.

Vitiligo is a pigmented skin disease caused by the localized destruction of melanocytes by autoimmune T cells. It is associated with other autoimmune conditions such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Graves' disease, Addison's disease. Because the eye has melanocytes, it affects the eye and causes uveitis. Vitiligo is not associated with the risk of melanoma.
