Get ready to shine: The 2023 Appearance Awards winners are here
Radiant, radiant skin is a goal we all aim for and at Shape we strongly believe that what you wear and put on your body has a direct impact on the health of your skin. The skin is the largest organ of the human body and acts as a barrier between the body and the environment, so it is important to nourish the skin from within. In terms of products, we are ready to help you.
There are a surprising number of skincare products out there. However, our experts, editors and testers took the products into their own hands to choose the best of the best for the Shape Skin Awards. Our guest judges, including award-winning dermatologists, celebrity fitness trainers and cosmetic chemists, share their expertise, recommending products they personally believe will keep their skin in top condition. To take advantage of this offer, we test hundreds of products in our New York labs and send our editors home with several products to test using selected methods.
The results are amazing. We collated the information and used the expertise of guest judges to select winners that are suitable for different skin tones and types. We've tried to divide the winners into easy-to-navigate categories to provide specific skin care recommendations. We've narrowed it down to four categories: acne products, sun protection products, body products, and face products. Each category has eight to ten subcategories that you may need from head to toe.
Take a look at each story to see which product scored the highest in this year's Shape Skin Awards.
Pills and freckles can be stressful and annoying. Say goodbye to acne with the right masks, cleansers, body gels and blemish treatments.
Sunscreen isn't just for summer. The sun's powerful UV rays can cause damage year-round with varying degrees of intensity depending on where you live. Protect your face, body, lips, eyes and scalp (yes, scalp!) with the best sunscreen.
Your face usually gets the most attention when it comes to products, but take this as a warning to devote more time and attention to the skin on your entire body. Whether you're into moisturizing, self-tanning or removing unwanted hair, our experts have all the products you need to perfect your full-body skin care regimen.
Investing in the right facial skin care products can help you achieve healthy and glowing skin. Find products that our guests, in-house testers and experts recommend are the perfect addition to your daily routine – day or night.

On-Site Testing Laboratory
Located in New York City, the lab has over 5,500 square feet of testing space where we can test everything from treadmills and jog carts to sports bras and comparative moisturizers. During each test, we capture testers' unboxing process, setup, and experience with photos, videos, and written materials to give a more complete picture of how the product performed during our tests.
Our editors, writers and producers test products under the guidance of trained professionals and experts using standard procedures. For an acne body wash, for example, we recruited 15 volunteers to stop using their usual products and use a prescription acne body wash for a six-week trial period. Each tester followed step-by-step instructions and recorded details (in addition to photos) about how the product worked. We bring together people of all skin types and ages to gather all the details you need to know to make an informed decision about your skin care needs.
Also, we go the extra mile with our internal testing. For moisturizers, we use a moisture reader to measure skin moisture levels before and after applying the product. For antiperspirants, we put testers on a treadmill for 15 minutes after application to test the initial smell , and we asked each person to wear the deodorant for at least 24 hours without showering. If you want to know if a product works, we've thought of all the possible ways to test it.
Real world testing
A product may work wonders in a laboratory or clinical setting, but the real test of a product is whether it works in the real world. Will moisturizer or cleanser become an integral part of your skin care routine? Are you looking forward to self-tanner? We've enlisted the help of real testers, including editors, writers and subject matter experts, to take the product into our hands (literally) at home and put it through a systematic testing process similar to what we do in the lab. .
At home or "real" testing usually takes a little longer to get used to the product. Testers fill out surveys that rate each product based on key features, provide helpful information about each product, and take photos and videos of how the product works in real life.
Everything you need to know about leather goods
As with most things, knowledge is power when it comes to skin care products. Familiarizing yourself with skin care product terminology, labels, packaging, and more can help you make smart investments in products you'll actually use and hopefully find useful.
Word confusion
Learning confusing skin care terms can be important to understanding which product to choose and why.
Parabens : A type of preservative used in skin care products that can be dangerous.
Sulfates : A harsh type of cleanser commonly found in detergents and shampoos that can be harsh on sensitive skin.
Retinol : A form of vitamin A used in anti-aging products to reduce wrinkles and fine lines. A drawback is that it can cause skin irritation.
Hyaluronic Acid: A popular ingredient in serums and moisturizers for its moisturizing properties.
Natural: Some skin care products are considered "natural" if they contain ingredients from natural sources. However, these terms are not restrictive and do not imply that the substance or product is safe or effective.
The best was before
Yes, you really can pay attention to the expiration date on your skin care products. It is usually indicated by an open can symbol with a number followed by the letter "M". For example, "12M" means that the product is no longer effective or safe after 12 months Product effectiveness and safety degrade over time due to many factors, including exposure to heat, light, bacteria and air. Some products have a shorter shelf life than others, especially sunscreens and "pure beauty" products due to their lack of active ingredients and preservatives. To extend the shelf life of your product, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and, whenever possible, use equipment to minimize exposure to bacteria.
chase away
Containers are important for shipping skin care products. Proper packaging can protect the product from rapid spoilage and loss of potency. Pump dispensers or products in airless containers promote hygiene and prevent product contamination. If you are looking for a large travel bag, you should focus on convenient packages, such as smaller versions of your travel products. Pump dispensers are also useful because they allow you to get the right amount of product with each application. From a sustainability and health perspective, the products you invest in can have an impact on the environment. Using reusable containers or investing in products packaged with recycled materials can help reduce your carbon footprint.
skin type
Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all product. Understanding your skin type is crucial to choosing the right products to address your skin care concerns and achieve the glow you desire.
Normal skin: Balanced, usually dry easily and not oily.
Dry skin: Lack of sebum, you may feel tight, flaky or itchy.
Oily skin: prone to breakouts, looks greasy
Combination Skin: A combination of oily and dry skin (usually oily in the T-zone and dry cheeks).
Sensitive Skin: Prone to irritation, sensitivity and redness.
active ingredients
Most skin care products contain several active ingredients. Paying attention to the active ingredients in your products is crucial to maximizing their effectiveness and ensuring they are safe and appropriate for your health and skin concerns.
