  • At the age of 14, Scarlett Johansson discovered that her face looked like a volcano because of acne.
  • The Marvel actress tried expensive treatments in her 20s that worsened her skin.
  • After the "horror" of moisturizer, it was this product that healed her skin.

Scarlett Johansson suffered from severe acne as a teenager, she told British Vogue.

The Black Widow actress says she had skin problems in her 20s and turned to make-up artists to cover them up. But in the end, it was not some expensive procedure that saved her, but a moisturizing cream.

"Growing up, the message in the beauty world was that acne was bad — there wasn't a lot of recognition or support for these perceived 'problems,'" she said.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Johansson said that when she was 14, a make-up artist told her that her face looked like the surface of a volcano.

"She wasn't bad," she said. “He also suffered from skin problems. But I became obsessed with her.

Johansson tried retinol, dry creams, scrubs and toners to lighten her skin in her 20s, but the products only irritated her.

The only thing she hasn't tried is moisturizer, and she told Vogue she's "scared" of putting it on her face. She said there wasn't as much information about skin barriers as there is now.

The skin barrier is the outer layer made up of dead skin cells, oils and proteins that helps protect the skin from environmental aggressors, said Cleveland Clinic dermatologist Melissa Piliang.

Lack of moisturizer can lead to deterioration of the skin barrier and the appearance of conditions such as acne.

Eventually Johansson was left with no other choice and instinctively used a moisturizer that she says was healing her skin.

“I just got rid of everything that I thought would irritate my skin. I did light exfoliation with a brush every day and started using a simple, non-comedogenic moisturizer,” she said. he told the Telegraph, adding that he saw results "in seven days".

"My skin started to heal, then I stopped scratching my face and checking my pores and just let my skin heal," she told Vogue.

Johansson used a variety of products, some luxury brands, some drugstore, to eventually develop her own skincare brand - The Outset - which launches this month.
