Your Healthy Family: Hospice And Palliative Care For Veterans In Our Community

As we discussed in our previous article, Colorado Springs: Your Healthy Family, many people want to avoid thinking about quality end-of-life experiences, but we all need to think about that. This can be a truly special and unforgettable moment and should be a sacred moment for our comrades.

Patricia Strawbridge had been caring for her 90-year-old father Claudine and her husband for many years and recently her father had to be hospitalized with high blood pressure. “When my father was in the hospital it was decided that when he got home he would need home care. He doesn't want physical therapy, he doesn't want occupational therapy, he wants someone to come and take care of him and ask him what he needs. The doctor suggested that we set up a hospice and Pikes Peak Hospice and the hospice were on the list. They were very nice and helpful when I called them.

At Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care, we are dedicated not only to meeting the needs of those approaching the end of life at various stages, but we also care for our military veterans.

Don Darvalix is President of Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care. “In Colorado Springs, we are the only Tier 5 partner of the Honorable Veterans Program, a partnership between the National Organization for Hospice and Hospice Care and the Veterans Administration. We want our team members to be well and continuously educated on how best to interact with our experienced patients.

Pikes Peak's commitment to hospice and palliative care for veterans extends beyond the We Honor Veterans program. They sponsored the first Colorado Women's Honor Flight to Washington, DC to honor veterans.

Dawn says, “It was important to us to support a veteran's first flight. We want to make sure we are part of this event to support everyone who has served our country. We can go to Washington DC with them and see how popular they really are. We are therefore very proud and grateful for the opportunity to support this event.
