National Healthy Skin Month: Dermatologists Top 5 Simple Steps To Avoid & Relieve Dry Skin This Winter

November is National Healthy Skin Month, and as temperatures drop across the country, Elizabeth Mullans, MD, board-certified dermatologist and skin care expert at Uptown Dermatology, is advising her patients to take 5 easy steps to maintain healthy skin. Left untreated, dry skin, irritation, redness, and unevenness can cause long-term problems, especially as the skin ages.

"As the weather gets colder, it's time to change up your skin care regimen," says Dr. Mullans. “Start by keeping your skin well hydrated and using gentle products found at the drugstore or supermarket to firm up the skin, keep it bright, healthy and supple, reduce irritation and increase comfort.”

5 easy steps to relieve and heal dry skin:

  1. MOISTURIZE EVERY DAY . The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using moisturizers daily to protect against dry, chapped, and itchy skin as the weather changes and moisture levels decrease. Bathing, showering, indoor heat, and low humidity can strip the skin of its natural oils and cause dry, chapped skin. Moisturizing immediately after cleansing with a gentle facial cleanser not only soothes, it helps add a protective layer to keep skin soft and hydrated, reduce the appearance of blemishes, and smooth out lines and wrinkles. In winter, I recommend using a mild moisturizer like Moisturizer at least twice a day, in the morning before bed and in the evening after washing your face. B. CeraVe Moisturizer, Aveeno Eczema Cream, or Eucerin Advanced Repair Cream.
  2. USE HYPOALLERGENIC CLEANING DUST. Clothing, bedding, and other materials that come into contact with sensitive skin can cause itching and irritation. Use Arm & Hammer Sensitive Skin Free and Clear to wash sheets, pillowcases and linen as it is hypoallergenic for sensitive skin and contains no dyes, fragrances or preservatives. It is also clinically tested and developed in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic for sensitive skin and is 100% SkinSAFE certified.
  3. AVOID USING ADDITIVE PRODUCTS OR SCRUBS. When it's time to take a shower, scrubbing and scrubbing can help you feel cleaner and remove dead skin, but people with sensitive skin can get skin damage from scrubbing, which can lead to dry skin and irritation. Stay hydrated with a lightweight, unscented moisturizer like Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel after an oil-free shower and your skin will feel like new.
  4. TAKE A DAILY MULTIVITAMIN WITH RETINOL AND BIOTIN. Vitafusion Multi + Beauty Gummies are daily multivitamins containing vitamins D, A, B, E and E and minerals that are easy to take, taste great and are ideal for healthy skin. Each serving of the 2-in-1 Vitamin Stick contains a dose of a multivitamin plus 5,000 mcg of Biotin and 450 mcg of Retinol (RAE Vitamin A) to support healthy hair, skin, and nails. Contains only natural flavors, no artificial flavors or sweeteners, no gluten, high fructose corn syrup, dairy or FD&C synthetic colors.
  5. MAKE SURE YOU DO ANNUAL EXAMINATION , especially when dry, irritated skin does not heal or worsens. It is very important to diagnose, treat and rule out an underlying condition such as an allergy, dermatitis, or something more serious.

“So remember to prioritize the health of your skin this winter,” adds Dr. Mullan added. "Make sure you use a small amount of a mild, unscented cleanser, wash your face with cold or lukewarm water, towel dry, leave it on, and apply a good moisturizer several times a day."
