It was Anne Hathaway's moment of brilliance one evening in Venice last May, and her make-up artist Gucci Westman was responsible for it. Dressing the actor for a Bulgari luxury jewelry event (Hathaway is an ambassador for the brand), Westman tried to balance fresh-faced makeup with red-carpet highlights. Her main line comes from her kit: the multi-purpose face serum from her Westman Atelier line, followed by her new Super Loaded liquid, a vitamin C and avocado oil skin brightener. “I was a little nervous at first because I was using Liquid Super Loaded in bright light, but it looked great,” he recalls. Hathaway uses this highlighter because she's not just a makeup artist, she's the epitome of balanced skin.
After all, the work of make-up artists begins long before the application of foundation. Skin preparation is key, taking into account factors such as material sensitivity, humidity and reactive dryness. Doctors may offer scientific rigor, experts say, but makeup artists invest all their time in everything from sitting in a chair to staring at the camera to washing their faces late at night. This intimate experience led to the addition of skincare products designed by makeup artists to provide a bottom-up approach to beauty.
This is not an entirely new concept. After all, makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury created Miracle Cream in 2013, and it's become a global bestseller as a mouth-watering DIY moisturizer (hello, Kate Moss ). Now we've taken it to the next level where we have trusted makeup artists (Westman, Kirsten Kjaer Weiss, Pat McGrath, Lisa Eldridge, and more) standing in for the skin exam.
Breaking into an already crowded category can be difficult. "With makeup, you have it all, from sheer color and complexion, from color stability to long-wear formulas, to the perfect application system," says Eldridge, Lancome's longtime global makeup creative director (and original YouTube star). . ) to manage their line of development. "Skincare is all about formula performance and clinically proven results to get the job done."
In other words, it's a completely different playing field. Well, why bother?
For Westman, who recently introduced skincare to the Westman Atelier cosmetics line, the addition is long-term and deeply personal. "Rosacea was a big incentive to focus on creating a line that really soothes and rejuvenates the skin," says the makeup artist, whose first work was with photographers Peter Lindbergh and Annie Leibovitz . , a list of clients and magazine covers (including last year's Allure cover with Jennifer Aniston ). "I tried everything - every drug, antibiotic - and nothing worked," explains Westman of his desire to create something on his own. For five years, the energizing skin serum (which contains active ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and peptides) has laid the foundation for other nourishing products, including the vitamin C-rich highlighter that Hathaway uses.
